Death Throes

Atef Karam

احتضار · عاطف كرم

— To her whose yesterday we live, while she denies me my tomorrow —

My love, what use are memories
when the heart lies barren and love is dead?
Is not tomorrow all there is of life!!

With yesterday I folded away every hope —
is there, I wonder, any tomorrow between us??

Are we to live on vows the mirage watered,
that lived while youth's high prospect lived,
and when we drew near it, it turned away and vanished?

Are we to remain
among eternity's thirsting ones,
living on, with no hope!..

I feel your death-agony filling my blood,
an emptiness climbing up my ribs,
sweeping your memory from my smile,
erasing it from my hearing
and from my ribs!!...

My love, what use are memories
when the heart lies barren and love is dead?
Is not tomorrow all there is of life!!

It is over!
