your fingers on the corners of the eyes and press without pulling the skin; then count to twenty.

To remove a double chin and beautify the neck.

Draw your lower lip taut, lift your neck, tip your head back, and count to thirty; then bring your head down slowly, and repeat this three times.

Bernard Shaw's Language

"Bernard Shaw," the well-known English writer, proposes introducing certain fundamental amendments to the English alphabet, so that it would consist of forty-two letters instead of twenty-six as at present. He holds that the proposed language would help those who speak English to express in writing every letter and every syllable of the spoken tongue.

***

He has declared more than once that he is prepared to grant any sum of money asked by any cultural society able to carry out his proposed scheme, and he has said that there is nothing strange in increasing the alphabet to forty-two letters, for the Persian language is made up of thirty-four letters, Hindustani of thirty-five, Hungarian of thirty-eight, and Japanese of seventy-three letters.

To New Mothers: The Teething Timetable

Every lady would do well to know the regular teething timetable of her children, to spare herself the worry that a bout of poor health in her child may sometimes cause her. In ordinary circumstances, and even among healthy children, the times of teething may differ a little; this may be seen even among brothers and sisters living in the same surroundings and enjoying the same nourishment. The average teething times among healthy children are as follows, according to the order of the teeth in the mouth from the middle line of the face backward:

a) The milk teeth: twenty in number in the two jaws. The front central incisors: appearing at from 8 to 10 months The canines: appearing at from 14 to 18 months The first molars: appearing at from 11 to 12 months The second molars: appearing at from 20 to 24 months That is, by the end of the child's second year all his milk teeth will have appeared.

b) The permanent teeth: the complete set numbers 32 in the two jaws. The front central incisors: appearing at from 7 to 8 years The lateral incisors: appearing at from 8 to 9 years The canines: appearing at from 11 to 13 years The first small molars: appearing at from 9 to 11 years The second small molars: appearing at from 10 to 12 years The first large molars: appearing at from 6 to 7 years The second large molars: appearing at from 12 to 13 years The third large molars: the wisdom teeth, appearing at from 18 to 25 years

Note: the mouth contains four teeth of each of the kinds mentioned above — that is, two in each jaw, one on the right side and the other on the left.

"Upon noticing any marked delay in the teething times mentioned, the child must be shown to the doctor so that he may treat the ailments causing it, which are for the most part connected with general health."
