and its calm lakes — as beautiful Xochimilco bears witness — and the Mexicans call it "the land of flowers."

That is why we find the spirit of the Mexican people merry and joyful, like its sweet-scented flowers.

And just as Mexico is rich in its natural wealth, so is it rich in its mineral wealth: it is counted among the first nations in the extraction of gold and silver, to say nothing of the extraction of abundant quantities of tin, zinc, iron, arsenic, copper, and graphite; and its petroleum wealth is very great indeed. The Mexican people is a peaceable people so long as a comfortable life and tranquility are assured it; but if its sanctity is violated and its dignity touched, you will see it like the eagle closing upon its prey, like the lion devouring its meal.

Mexico's independence came in 1821, after numerous revolts launched by Father Hidalgo; and since the Mexican people loves liberty by instinct, republican rule was proclaimed in 1823, and it has practiced it and preserved the democratic order down to our own day.

Mexico today holds more than thirty thousand of our sons, working in commerce and industry. They have their material and moral standing, and they enjoy very good relations with the Mexican government and the Mexican people.

Nursing Becomes the Noblest Profession

the treatment of rheumatism, the nursing of children, and scientific nursing. In one of the pictures you see the nurse in her leisure hours, in cheerful scenes with books, flowers, and comfortable seats, and how the nurses are encouraged to take exercise and enjoy means of recreation.

It appears plainly in this exhibition what perfected and comprehensive facilities of health the London County Council hospital comprises, and parents can now assure themselves that nursing is a calling to which they may be proud to see their daughters belong.

There are films showing the nurse's life in her student days, the care of those afflicted in their minds, the nursing of consumptives, and several other kinds of nursing; and there are several photographs showing that still other specialized branches of nursing stand ready to welcome the alert and clever student.

He Was Smuggling Wheat — and a Hyena Ate Him!

The following appeared in our Syrian colleague "Al-Ayyam": In the village of al-Adiliyya, near the Awaj River, there lived a man named Ali Shamma, aged 40 to 45, who was in the habit of leaving his village every evening with a sack of wheat loaded on his donkey, smuggling it to Damascus or to one of its villages, then returning to his village of al-Adiliyya before daybreak.

One night the poor man's donkey was seen knocking at the door of his house with his loads on her back. The people of the house awoke, and when they opened the door they saw the donkey with the master's belongings on her back, and they realized there was some mystery in the matter. After the villagers had gathered, they walked some 100 meters outside the village and found the poor man's shoes stained with blood — but of the body they found no trace...

In the evening they made for the Awaj River, and there, on a stretch of ground on the riverbank, they saw the prints of the man's hands, as though he had been lying on his back; and they saw clearly the prints of the hands and feet of the hyena that had devoured him — it had eaten its fill of him, then flung the rest of the body into the river...

Some shepherds declared that they had heard a distant cry in the black of night: perhaps it was the call for help of this poor man who fell prey to this beast, which ate him and flung his body into the river to cover up its crime!...
