Our correspondent of "The Woman's Voice" in Tripoli, Miss Thurayya Haddad, has sent us the following letter:

The Alumnae Associations of the American School

On Thursday, May 9, 1946, the alumnae association of the American Girls' School held a special meeting in the school hall, attended by a large gathering of alumnae, the head of the school Mr. Dickerd and his wife, and some of the teachers. Dr. Abdullah Saadeh lectured to them on "The Shortcomings of Man"; it was a valuable lecture, exceedingly useful and inventive.

The Women's Charitable Society

The Women's Charitable Society holds a literary or religious gathering every month, to which it invites the women to listen to a lecture delivered by His Eminence the great Ustad, Sheikh Salah al-Din Abu Ali, the delegate of al-Azhar in Tripoli. The society devoted the gathering of the tenth of May to a lecture on the orphan and on urging people to come to his aid. The gathering opened with the Lebanese anthem, sung by the orphans of the Islamic College. After an orphan had recited ten verses of the Holy Qur'an, the president, Mrs. Iqbal Izzeddine al-Dhouq, delivered a brief address and gave a vivid picture of the women's charitable movement in Tripoli; she was followed by Mrs. Salma Manla Alameddine with a speech entitled "Dreams of the Past and the Gleam of the Future." Then the worthy Ustad Sheikh Salah al-Din Abu Ali delivered his lecture, which moved the audience to tears and made a profound impression on every soul.

We would have liked to publish the texts of the delightful speeches that were delivered, but their late arrival left no room for it.

The Visit of the Arab Women's Union

On May 14, 1946, there came to fragrant Tripoli a delegation from the body of the Arab Women's Union in Beirut, composed of the president of the Union, Mrs. Rose Shahfa; Mrs. Adele Nahou, honorary president of the Union and president of its finance committee; Mrs. Wasila Salman, advisory member of the Union; Mrs. Zahia Salman, president of the child welfare committee; and Mrs. Riqqa Salam, treasurer of the Union.

The delegation visited Mrs. Iqbal Izzeddine al-Dhouq, president of the Women's Charitable Society in Tripoli, and met with a group of the presidents and members of the city's other women's societies. After refreshments

had been taken, they moved on to visit Mrs. Karima Assi, president of the Orthodox societies. Mrs. Assi and all the members gave the Union's delegation a warm welcome, in which expressions of friendship and affection were exchanged, showing the pleasure and satisfaction felt at this visit, which gives proof of the good accord among the women's societies in Lebanon.

Then Mrs. Iqbal Izzeddine al-Dhouq delivered a welcoming address that testified to the firmness of the bonds of friendship among the societies, and her words made an impression on every heart. She was followed by Mrs. Rose Shahfa,

president of the Union, who praised the works the society is carrying out. And after Mrs. Zahia Salman had delivered an engaging speech, in which she told us of the success of child welfare in Beirut and of the new task they now wish to undertake, namely the founding of a second child welfare home in the Achrafieh quarter.

Then the delegation was invited to a sumptuous luncheon at the Hotel Hakim, attended by the presidents and members of the women's societies of the city and a group of gracious ladies. There Mrs. Assi delivered kind words, giving the guests the most beautiful of welcomes and expressing her appreciation of this visit, which renewed the pledge of solidarity and cooperation and strengthened the ties of relation and friendship between the Union and all the societies affiliated with it.
