Fashion by Television

الأزياء بالتلفزيون

Among the latest things achieved by the fashion houses in the great capitals is the showing of the newest fashion models by means of television. And since a special program has been decided upon for this showing, the owners of receiving sets can now follow these proceedings continuously. Here, for the reader, is how the first operation of this kind took place, as described by one of those who watched it in their home. He said:

“There was nothing to wonder at, except that we were at a vast distance from the broadcasting station. As for the show, it went off in the manner followed in the fashion houses, where the girls pass by wearing the newest models — dresses, hats, and so forth. But the strange thing about it was that the commentator who explained to the women how to choose gowns and hats, and the way to pick out colors that agree with one another, was a man.”

And he added: “I cannot, for all that, refrain from saying something about the feeling that stirred the women and their husbands during the showing. I do not exaggerate if I say that joy so took possession of the women that their heads all but flew off. Some of them summoned the dressmakers to their homes to copy the models and profit from them by the easiest means. As for the men — one could talk of them without end. Fear took hold of them, and they began looking toward the near future, when their wives would ask them to increase the clothing allowances. And there lies the great calamity and the mighty disaster. No wonder — for the first question my wife put to me at the end of the television show was: Can you increase my monthly allowance for clothes? And by how much? My mind nearly left me.”

This is a picture of what is now happening in most homes. Perhaps television will spare us much of the business of moving from place to place, and will make many matters easier for us — besides saving time and money!!!
