Brides of the Sea

On its beautiful shore, you need a few things quite necessary to your comfort and your appearance:

The handbag in which you put your toilet things, and a pretty hat to wear when the sun's heat grows fierce, to guard your hair from dryness and your head from ache. It is well not to use powders on your face, but to anoint it with a special liquid that preserves your skin and gives you a pretty brown color. Use likewise a lipstick that protects your lips, and dark glasses to keep your eyes from the blazing rays of the sun; and put on light shoes to help you over the sand and pebbles.

As for your sitting in the sun, its length varies according as your skin is accustomed to exposure to the sun or not. If your skin is sensitive, it is better to stay under the parasol for fear of its burning.

And before you go down into the water, use a cap to guard your hair from the wet, especially when your hair is of the lank sort.

If you wish to dry your body in the sun, wrap yourself in a towel or a robe, and renew the red of your lips and comb your hair. It is advisable to bring with you also a bottle of cologne and a box of talcum powder to dust between the toes of your feet after bathing in cold water, as a cleansing against germs.

And mind the harmony of the colors you use, and let your shoes and your kit bag be of the same color.

The sea... this sea that draws you to it, that braces you and

strengthens you, and with which you feel ease and calm, demands of you in its turn that you not neglect your dress and your toilette upon its shore.

Often you meet acquaintances on the beach who fail to know you—and that is only because of the great difference between your appearance in the street and your appearance on the shore; and this springs from your neglect.

Here you feel free of ceremony, so you grow careless of your looks and neglect your hair and your face and what you wear, and you appear to the eye as a mote that hurts and pains it. Here is what will help you choose your sea clothes:

If your legs are thin and weak, your body will look exceedingly spare in short trousers with wide pleats or with frills; we therefore advise you to use the simple, close-fitting mannish cut. If the upper part of your body is slight, we advise you to wear the two-piece suit with a little gathering in the bodice (Corsage) to give you proportion. If, on the other hand, you are heavy about the hips, wear pleated shorts or a pleated skirt. Use the one-piece bathing suit with a dart at the waist (Pince). And if your bust is large, pray do not use cotton blouses, for they spoil its shape. As for long trousers, they are becoming to all figures except the massive ones.
