Surat Maryam

In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

... And mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her people to an eastern place * And took a veil to screen herself from them; then We sent to her Our Spirit, and he appeared before her as a man in full form * She said: I take refuge from you with the All-Merciful, if you fear God * He said: I am only a messenger from your Lord, to bestow upon you a pure boy * She said: How shall I have a boy, when no man has touched me, and I have not been unchaste? * He said: Even so; your Lord has said: It is easy for Me; and that We may make him a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us; and it was a matter decreed * So she conceived him, and withdrew with him to a far-off place * And the pangs of childbirth drove her to the trunk of the palm tree. She said: Would that I had died before this and been a thing forgotten, utterly forgotten * Then he called to her from below her: Do not grieve; your Lord has set below you a rivulet * And shake toward you the trunk of the palm; it will drop upon you fresh ripe dates * So eat and drink and be comforted of eye; and if you should see any human being, say: I have vowed a fast to the All-Merciful, and today I shall speak to no human * Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said: O Mary, you have done a monstrous thing * O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste * So she pointed to him. They said: How shall we speak to one who is in the cradle, a little child? * He said: I am the servant of God; He has given me the Book and made me a prophet * And He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I live * And dutifulness to my mother; and He has not made me a tyrant, wretched *
