General Meeting of the Lebanese Women's League

The Lebanese Women's League, under the presidency of Mrs. Heneni Tarcha, held its monthly general meeting at the hall of Ahliah National College in Beirut, on the afternoon of Friday, April 18, 1947. The lecturer was the eminent Mr. Ibrahim Khairallah.

Mrs. Ellen Rihan opened the meeting by reading the minutes of the previous meeting, then presented the honored lecturer to those present, all of them workers in the field of the women's renaissance in Lebanon.

Mr. Khairallah gave a valuable and delightful talk in which he briefly traced the history of woman's struggle in the world to obtain her rights in full. He concluded by saying: "The misery we are in could have been far lighter had woman taken an effective part in legislation. For however broad a man's understanding may be, he cannot comprehend, as he ought, woman's true need. And I affirm most decisively that there is no reform for Lebanon unless the Lebanese woman assumes her rightful place. And if woman wishes to assume this place, let her work toward it gradually, beginning with the municipal councils, then demanding that the government open schools for girls equal to the schools opened for boys."

Miss Ibtihaj Kaddoura was foremost among the ladies present, and she offered some remarks that met with a far-reaching echo of approval. Among the things she said was that she protests against the expression "the emancipation of woman," because it implies an acknowledgment of her bondage, and from now on it must be abandoned. She then said that the Lebanese woman demands her rights as a citizen; and when that is accomplished, all the other rights will follow to her of their own accord.

S.Sh. (Homs)

A somewhat pampered character... yet it is, at bottom, level-headed... Ample fortune awaits you if you know how to open your eyes and look about you, for they love you and wish you well. A somewhat late marriage, but a rich one.

A.A.R. (Baghdad)

A character out of keeping with your age... Try to find harmony between yourself and your friends. Happy news after 4 or 5 months from the fourteenth of April... Be composed: your happiness depends upon the measure of your sobriety. A long journey.

N.Q. (Amman)

A character driven to excess, and unnatural, yet very faithful, and it must serve... Your imagination and your fancies lie outside the range of your will... And yet, you will succeed. A sudden marriage.

R.A.K. (Palestine)

A character very near to the heart, which creates an atmosphere of charm and optimism,

yet it does not agree well with those of its own sex. A long journey. Marriage abroad. A long life. You will triumph thanks to sobriety...

A.B. (Jaffa)

A practical character, and not withdrawn. Eyes and ears open... not easily taken in... You have fallen into an offense of some importance. Many young men circle about you, and you are right not to be hasty. Marriage to a thinker, but it is far off.

W.Sh. (Beirut)

An optimistic and somewhat fanciful character. A will that is nearly weak, especially with the other sex. It seems your future inclines toward being abroad, and there you will make a love marriage. A long life... danger.

D.N. (Baghdad)

A pampered character... inclined to painful jesting, and to small adventures... They love you dearly, while you show indifference and mockery... They will envy you in your future... An early marriage, and into a distinguished rank.
