Miscellaneous News

• The great woman of letters Mrs. Salma Sayegh has returned from Brazil to the hills of Lebanon after a long absence. No sooner had her feet touched the soil of Lebanon than a great throng of admirers of her writing, men and women alike, hastened to welcome her. A hearty welcome to her!

• We have received from Mr. Sayyid Qutb, the Egyptian man of letters, a letter announcing to us that he has been obliged to give up the editorship-in-chief of the magazine al-'Alam al-'Arabi for reasons touching his personal principles. The Woman's Voice regrets this necessity, which has deprived the magazine al-'Alam al-'Arabi of so great a writer as Mr. Qutb. And we wish al-'Alam al-'Arabi every success.

• Miss Loris Hallas has left Jaffa for the capital of Norway as delegate of the Young Women's Christian Associations in the country, where she represented Palestine at the women's conference held at Oslo at the end of July.

• The Solidarity Society in Meknes performed the play Layla bint al-Nu'man, a beautiful historical play which many women attended.

• A new society has been formed in Tiberias, its aim to raise the standing of woman. In Nazareth, too, a society affiliated with the Women's Union has been formed. The societies were represented at the women's conference in Jerusalem.

• Miss Thurayya Malhas has returned to Amman from the American University of Beirut after taking the degree of bachelor of science. Thus does the sister country Jordan stride forward toward a true renaissance.

• We omitted to mention in the last issue the news of the wedding of the highly refined Miss Afaf Aoun to the gracious notable Mr. Salim Tannous. To the bridal pair our sincere congratulations.

• The two gracious ladies Afifi Majdalani and Jehanette Nadris have returned from Cairo, where they took part in the funeral of their dear departed kinsman, the late Nicolas al-Khoury, who perished during the past month, a victim of treachery and crime. We repeat, on this occasion, our condolences to the family of the departed and to his honored companions — may God spare them every sorrow.

• "The Woman's Voice" is pleased to point to the commendable efforts being made by the excellent lady Mrs. Farida Juha Malik, wife of the late Aziz Bey Malik, among the community in Australia, in gathering material donations for some of our charitable societies in the homeland, and especially for the Orthodox orphanage directed and supervised by the esteemed Mrs. Hortense Boulos Tamer. To Mrs. Malik, the thanks of us all.
