Letters and News

There arrived at last in Beirut, returning from the United States, Dr. Jamal Karam Harfush, the specialist in children's medicine and one of the prominent members of the Lebanese Women's League. She was received by a large company of her friends and of admirers of her letters and her learning.

The Woman's Voice extends Dr. Jamal a handsome welcome and congratulates her on her safe return to continue her struggle in the scientific and social fields.

• The Lebanese Arab Women's Federation took part in the funeral procession of Emir Bashir. The delegation was headed by Miss Ibtihaj Kaddoura, president of the Federation, with the following ladies as members: Heneni Tarcha, Hayat Beyhum, Zahia Salman.

• The marriage contract was concluded between Mr. Habib Hourani, son of the late Ibrahim al-Hourani of goodly memory and legacy, and Miss Hayat Jabara. The celebration took place on October 5, 1947, at the home of the al-Ariss family in Jdeidet Marjeyoun. To the bridal pair our sincere congratulations.

• The Village Poet, Mr. Rashid Salim al-Khoury, has sent us this letter addressed to Mrs. Mari Yanni Ata Allah. We publish it, sharing the great poet's sentiments and his sorrow.

To the great woman of letters, Mrs. Mari Yanni Ata Allah:

I do not claim to come before you in this letter with some philosophy unknown to you, or to prescribe for you a new remedy for the wounded heart. It is rather a sympathy of souls, a communion of hearts, a mingling of tears — those of tender feeling possess nothing else, nor can brothers and sisters help one another in grief with anything better. Your loss in Constantine is the loss of every true man of letters, every genuine Arab, every free fighter, for he was all of these. Though I never knew him by sight, I was not ignorant of his works; and though I never once corresponded with him by pen, I feel that he is my kinsman, my companion, and my brother. What makes him dearer still to me is that he was the brother of Marie Yanni first, and of Marie Yanni Atallah last — the writer who herself served her nation with her high culture, her noble feeling, and her patriotic ardor. This tear of mine for him, God rest his soul, is a tear of esteem for him as a living worker in the building of Arabism; a comrade's tear, for I share his striving and his feeling; and a tear of affection, for he is the brother of the wise and dutiful proprietress of Minerva. Accept then, my sister, my pure sentiment, and add my tear to your tears. And do not forget to be a believer, firm in faith, that we belong to God, and to Him, the Exalted, we return.

• The International Women's Union held a meeting in Paris at the beginning of last October to consider the means by which woman must contribute to the establishment of peace in the world. The Lebanese Arab Women's Federation was

invited to attend this congress, but circumstances prevented it; so the president of the Federation, Miss Ibtihaj Kaddoura, sent a memorandum to the congress and entrusted the wife of our Minister Plenipotentiary in Paris, Mr. Ahmad al-Daouk, with presenting it on her behalf.

This memorandum set forth the point of view of the Lebanese woman on the paths leading to the establishment of peace among the peoples. One of these paths was the vindication of the Arabs' right in Palestine, for failure to vindicate this right threatens peace and security in the Near East, which may lead to their

being threatened in the whole world. The memorandum also dealt with the Lebanese Women's Union, in which all the women's associations are represented, in the cause of raising woman's standing and her obtaining all her civil and political rights on an equal footing with man.

• We have received the second issue of the magazine "al-Wurud," founded by the man of letters Mr. Wadih Shibli. We found it a beautiful garden containing a refined collection of articles and poems. We wish it every success and prosperity.

• Our friend Dr. Sami Saikali and his gracious wife have been blessed with a baby boy. We offer them our congratulations and wish the child a long life in the shelter of his noble parents.

• The book "The Heart of Lebanon" by Ameen Rihani has been published. Ask for it at Dar al-Kitab and all bookshops.

The Parker “51” Pen

Parker “51”

You do not know the pleasure of writing until you use the Parker “51” pen

• The demand for it is unequaled everywhere. And its pencil falls in no way short of it in quality and beauty. You write with ink that is dry even though it is liquid. And such is the fineness of its nib — 14-karat gold — that it makes you write with the grace and smoothness of silk.
