Geneva and is meeting these days in Havana, searching for the means capable of developing economic relations among the nations, raising their level, and increasing commercial exchange; the Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization, which held its annual conference recently in Mexico and will hold its next annual conference in Lebanon in the months of October and November; and the Food and Agriculture institution, one of whose branches is today holding a general conference in Cairo.
Then the Economic and Social Council, besides its supervision of these specialized institutions, has created certain commissions and made them subject to its direct oversight. The most important of these commissions are the Employment and Economic Commission, the Transport and Communications Commission, the Statistical Commission, the Commission on Human Rights (among whose subcommissions is the Committee
on Freedom of Information), the Social Affairs Commission, the Commission on the Rights of Woman, the Fiscal Commission, the Population Commission, and the Narcotics Commission.
Lebanon has been represented
in the best possible manner in the tasks of these institutions and commissions; and it was Dr. Charles Malik who, in the present session, was elected president of the Council and a member of three commissions at once, namely: the committee for negotiation with the specialized institutions, and the Commission on Human Rights, of which he was and remains rapporteur. Thanks to the breadth of his learning and the depth of his culture, he won the admiration of the representatives of the remaining states, and they bore him to the chair of the presidency despite the violent opposition of the Zionists, who consider him the first enemy of partition.
So all Lebanon, government and people, appreciates at its true worth this dazzling victory he has achieved... and it is fully confident that Dr. Charles Malik, in carrying out his lofty new duties, will work as he has worked in the past to raise the name of Lebanon, to strengthen its standing, and to spread its intellectual mission among the nations.
