Miscellaneous Women's News

• Miss Ibtihaj Kaddoura, president of the Lebanese Arab Women's Federation, has returned from the sister country of Egypt after attending there the memorial ceremony for the late Huda Hanim Shaarawi. She represented the Lebanese Women's Union and the Syrian Women's Union at that ceremony, and delivered the ladies' address on the great departed — an address of sorrow, appreciation, and reverence.

The Woman's Voice, which speaks for the Lebanese Women's League, in recording this news thanks Miss Ibtihaj Kaddoura and praises her struggle in the national women's field and her ardor for every reform project that calls for high resolve and sure, sincere devotion.

• In our account of the Child-Welfare Society's party in this issue we omitted to mention the remaining names of the ladies who donated to the Child-Welfare Society. They are: Mrs. Victoria Dabbas, 7 liras; Mrs. Najla Cortas Zureik, 5 liras; Mrs. Shafiqa Abdul Rahim Diab, 100 liras.

We also omitted to mention that the Lebanese government has awarded the great militant Mrs. Zahia Salman, president of the Society, the gilded Order of Merit in appreciation of her blessed efforts in the field of social service.

The Woman's Voice offers her its most sincere congratulations on this recognition, which she deserves in fullest measure.

• On February 8 last, a commemoration was held at the Lebanese National Library in memory of the great and devoted Arab militant Sheikh Qustantin Yanni. It was a solemn ceremony, in which the foremost orators took turns recounting the great departed's virtues, his merits, and his struggle for the sake of his country. Then the well-known woman of letters Mrs. Mari Yanni, the departed's sister, delivered the word of thanks in the family's name, and it made a deep impression on the hearts of those present.

• The book "It Is Told of the Arabs," by Mr. Musa Sulayman, has appeared, published by Dar al-Ilm lil-Malayin. It is a splendid selection from the old Arabic tales in all their variety — legendary, lyrical, social, heroic, and religious.

From the Health Committee of the Women's Union
Christine Rizk

• We have received the following from Mrs. Christine Rizk, president of the Health Committee of the Women's Union:

The Health Committee of the Lebanese Arab Women's Federation continues to work with zeal and energy for the improvement of the state of health and of general cleanliness in the town. It has exerted numerous efforts which have brought proven benefits and many results for the comfort of the inhabitants, too many to enumerate here. It regrets that the municipality has not allowed it the health motorcar that used to carry it through the quarters of the city to keep in touch with the inhabitants and to hear their complaints, so as to raise them to the proper quarter — this on account of the epidemics current this year.

And we are pleased to announce that the great benefactress the Marquise de Freige has presented to the committee, as is her custom every year, a bolt of national cloth, which we have sewn and distributed as aprons to some of the bakery workers, so that they may appear in a clean state. We have hopes that this distribution will grow to include all the bakeries of the town. To her our thanks and our appreciation.

And it is a cause for satisfaction to see, on the one hand, this genuine concern on the part of the authorities for the public interests, and, on the other, compliance with the orders of the authorities out of willingness and consent on the part of the inhabitants; and this shows us clearly that culture and refinement have begun to yield their results in the character of the community and in its understanding of the meaning of progress and advancement.
