...and Beauty!

.. والجمال !

Since the earliest ages of history, woman has tried to add to her beauty and her charms with jewels wrought of metals and precious stones. Nor has this insistent desire stopped at the young woman: it has passed beyond her to the old women whose fresh beauty time has withered, for they have often contrived to appear in an aspect of grandeur and pomp by way of adornment with jewels that represent not merely the skill of their workmanship, but wealth and standing in their commercial value. Yet jewels need not be of high price in order to delight the eyes of their owners and their beholders. The lady in the picture printed beside these words has graced her throat with a necklace of diamonds and true emeralds that seizes hold of hearts—and of purses. And this other lovely necklace, with its dangling fish, is likewise made of silver overlaid with a coating of gold, as is the bracelet shown in the middle of the necklace, adorned at its end with a hand set with a beautiful blue stone. Women in America and Europe incline to adorning their hair with jewels; and what ornament to set off a simple dressing of the hair could be more splendid than these jewels with which these two ladies are decked?
