kissed her lips — all this while people were unaware of them — until her father married her to a rich man, coveting his money and his wealth. Then the lovelorn breeze grew furious and set about gathering the armies of the winds from all the quarters of the inhabited world, to avenge his love and his honor. He intended to bring the palace crashing down upon his beloved; but no sooner did he see her beside her child's bed than he melted away before the unconquerable dominion of motherhood.

And the great poet Abu Madi tells us a charming story on the subject of motherhood, in which we read the following:

I relate to you, from an enchanting poet, a tale whose teller is Muhammad. He said: A lord invited his companions on a night of delicate hours, and there gathered in his palace a band, noble, with no intruder among them. Each of them drank to the secret of her he loved among the fair, and sang her praises. Among the drinkers was a gallant youth whose countenance enchanted all who saw it. "And you," said the companions, breaking into laughter, "have you a beauty to whom you raise your glass?" He said: "Indeed — I drink

to the secret of her who would ransom me with her soul, as I would her. Her image is stamped upon my heart; nothing, not even death, can efface it. She does not court my favor in hypocrisy, nor kiss me in falsehood and pretense. My money may be lost and youth may pass, but her love endures, and my love for her. To the secret of her whom no maiden among you, however high she soars in love, can match!" Then the master of the house cried: "My lord, you have described her — why do you not name her?"

"Do you blush at the name of the one you love? Is there a beauty without a name?" He bowed his head, unconcerned, and murmured humbly: "My mother."

Yes — this is the mother in her greatness and her tenderness; this is the mother with her inspiration and her prompting. Will this noble nation, then, undertake the preparation of the good mother — a preparation that fits her to create a great and respected nation? And will it give woman a fine and exacting care, so that when this broken wing of the nation grows strong, the nation in its turn will be strong enough to soar far into the sky of goodness and beauty?
