Our Beloved Brother in Moses

This is an important document which one of our educated ladies came upon in a Tunisian manuscript, found by a monk of Salamanca while he was searching among the records of the old states of Spain.

In the year 1492, Amur, the first rabbi of Spain, wrote to the great Hakham Bashi, whose seat was in Istanbul, complaining and seeking guidance concerning the threats of Spain's new law of expulsion.

The Hakham Bashi answered him with a letter in which appear the evil intentions of the Jews toward the world from the beginning of history, and how they aim at seizing control of the world by way of corrupting its laws and its religions. And here is the document:

Our beloved brother in Moses,

We have received your letter in which you inform us of the calamities and the cares that you are suffering in Spain. We console you and we grieve at your grief. Here is the counsel of our great men and rabbis:

1 — As to your saying that the King of Spain, "Ferdinand," compels you to embrace Christianity: embrace it, since you have no escape.

2 — And as to your saying that they rob you of your money: make your sons merchants, so that little by little they may strip the Christians of what they have.

3 — Then, as to what you say of their attempts to kill you: make your sons doctors and apothecaries, so that they may strip them of their money and their lives.

4 — You said that they destroy your synagogues: make your sons priests and theologians, so that they may be able to destroy their churches.

5 — As regards the rest of the matters that trouble you: try to have your sons become lawyers, and see to it that they meddle in the affairs of the state, so that when you have gained mastery over the Christians you will be able to seize control of the world and take revenge upon them.

6 — Do not depart from these orders of ours; for, notwithstanding the present state of things, you will find by experience that you will arrive at real power and influence...
