by returning them to the cage — that is impossible, and undesirable. It will be done by watching over them with the vigilance of the wise and prudent, above all in the period of puberty, whose far-reaching effects on the girl's life as a mother who will conceive and give birth in the future we have pointed out. After that, attention should be given to the good choice of a husband; and I shall speak of this choice only insofar as it concerns pregnancy and childbirth.

It is observed that the husband of extraordinary bulk, unusually broad of bone, may beget children of such size that his wife will not escape danger at their birth if she does not match him in bulk. For this reason parents should attend to this point, and consider the

proportion between the frames of the two spouses, before concerning themselves with social position, the dowry, the "shabka," and the like.

And far more important than this is that the prospective husband should not be one of those addicted to alcohol. There are cases proving that the children of addicts are for the most part weak, puny, and feeble-minded, or among those afflicted with the bending sickness — those who "fall on the hour," as the common people say. In the children of the addict there is a predisposition to inflammation of the kidneys, and an inclination toward indulgence in narcotics. And these baneful symptoms may be transmitted by heredity even to the third generation.

Council decided at its session in February 1943 to move the public houses from within the capital to its outskirts' (that is, to move the garbage can from the kitchen to the balcony). Five years have now passed since that decision, and the municipality has not lifted a finger.

The foundress of this work in our country

Yet Mrs. Richani and Mrs. Nakhou, president of the present committee, and a number of worthy ladies and men have joined the membership of this committee and have begun demanding the abolition of these houses, not their removal; they have renewed their determination, sent petitions, and repeated the demand.

Thousands of liras have been spent on beautifying Beirut from the outside; but that street in the heart of the city, at its loveliest point, is still a den of corruption in which the microbes of disease make their nest.

Aminah Makdisi
The Children's Welfare Society

It was originally a committee attached to the Arab Women's Federation, then it separated and became an independent society. It founded two homes for children, one in Musaytbeh and the other in Achrafieh, through the energy of its active president, Mrs. Zahia Salman, who originated the idea of 'Children's Day', celebrated in Beirut and the large cities of Lebanon in April of each year, when the volunteers go about the streets collecting donations, which go to the society's fund for the sheltering, teaching, and entertainment of homeless children. Thanks to this society, woman has been able to secure shelter, clothing, and food for the Lebanese child, so that he may be happy as the other children of the world are happy.
