The Red Cross

الصليب الاحمر

The Lebanese Red Cross continues its activity on behalf of our brethren the Palestinian refugees. The most important works undertaken by this humanitarian institution during the past month fall under three heads:

First — the distribution of milk in the cities of Beirut and Sidon to children whose ages range from one day to six years. Each child is given daily 350 grams of sterilized milk, kept in clean bottles. The number of children enjoying this milk is:
In Beirut: 3,050 children
In Sidon: 600 children

Second — securing correspondence between the refugees in Lebanon and their families remaining in Palestine. The number of letters received so far has reached 2,039, and of letters dispatched, 2,307.

Third — the Lebanese Red Cross provides medical care for the sick among the refugees at all its dispensaries in Beirut, Damour, Sidon, Tripoli, Zahle, and Baalbek...

• On the occasion of Christmas, the Lebanese Red Cross distributed to 850 poor Lebanese children, through its dispensaries:
500 kilos of soap
650 kilos of dates
200 of sugar
200 of rice
1,500 of lentils
3,000 pieces of assorted clothing.

• The Red Cross presented to the command of the Lebanese Army 500 infant layettes, to be distributed to the families of soldiers of modest means; the picture at the left shows this.

• The Tripoli branch of the Lebanese Red Cross continues its work through the zeal of its energetic president, Mrs. Iqbal al-Dhawq. The number of Palestinian refugees there has reached five thousand persons, among whom it recently distributed winter clothing, soap, and 150 sacks of flour.

• Mrs. Laure Khoury, wife of the august President of the Republic, donated to the Central Committee for Palestinian Refugees seven hundred infant layettes, to be given to children newly born in the shelters.
