This Society, the aim of which is to take care of poor children whose mothers are forced to work to earn a living, was organized in April, 1948, with sixty members. Mrs. Malaki Haik was elected President.

In May 1948, the first kindergarten was opened in Ashrafieh, (Beirut) for children of both sexes between the age of three to seven. This was financed partly by donations, funds raised on «Child Day», and subscriptions.

Although thier funds were limited, the members tried hard to establish a kindergarten fully equipped and having a spacious garden. They also provided each child with a uniform sewed by the members themselves and appointed two teachers, as well as a maid, to look after the children. Doctor Toufic Karam kindly volunteered to examine the children's health once a week and the Lebanese Red-Cross Dispensary supplied them with medicine.

As the children are badly under-nourished, milk and cakes are served them twice a week, in addition to a full lunch which is supplied by one of the members once a week.

Although the society has not yet completed a year since its establishment, the number of children enrolled this year was 103 compared to 60 last year.

This success has further increased the zeal and efforts of the members who organized a charitable movie-party in January 1949, the revenue from which was used for the establishment of another kindergarten.

Through the efforts of Mrs. Malaki Haik and Miss Alice Bardaweel, the second kindergarten was opened in El-Nasra quarter. So far 70 children have enrolled. The kindergarten will be officially inaugurated on March 19, under the auspices of Mrs. Bechara El-Khoury, wife of the President of the Republic. Dr. Elie Wakeel has kindly volunteered to examine and check on the health of these children twice a week.

This is a brief picture of the work and achievements of this society. We hope that more kindergartens will be opened in the future in order to provide better opportunities for unfortunate children.
