must be boiled for a very short time in the smallest possible quantity of water, and this water must not be thrown away but must be used again in cooking. Using steam for cooking
is far better than boiling. Hard vegetables should be cut into very small pieces so that their boiling time is not prolonged.
So that these directions may be practical, it is advisable for the woman to follow this program in her eating:
1 — Milk: half a liter daily, drunk or cooked, as in rice with milk or muhallabiyya.
2 — Vegetables: especially spinach, once a day. It is advisable that some of the vegetables be uncooked.
3 — Bread: with every meal.
4 — Meat: including fish or fowl and its liver — at least one serving every day.
5 — Eggs: one or two eggs a day.
6 — Fruit: two servings a day.
7 — Liquids: taking plenty of them is very beneficial. The quantity should not be less than eight glasses daily.
This is a brief glimpse of the importance of the pregnant woman's diet. Precaution is not confined to diet alone: physical exercise, recreation, and sleep have their importance for preserving the health of the mother and the fetus.
