"The Woman's Voice" is most eager that there should be bonds of acquaintance between it and its readers, its friends, and its acquaintances. It therefore hopes that its readers, wherever they may be, will send it all their news, their parties, and their at-home hours. It will never fail to publish this news, welcoming it with the warmest of welcomes. "The Editors"
• In the middle of last month Mrs. Laure El-Khoury, wife of His Excellency the President, departed, accompanied by her daughter Miss Huguette, to spend several months in Europe for reasons of health. She was seen off at the steamer by the head of the government, the members of the Cabinet and their wives, and a large number of the city's distinguished ladies. "The Woman's Voice" wishes its First Lady and Miss Huguette a blessed
journey and a happy stay.
• At the beginning of last month Mrs. Amha, wife of Ahmad Bey al-Daouk, Lebanon's Minister Plenipotentiary in Paris, returned to Paris after spending several months in the homeland, among family and friends. Private banquets were held in Mrs. Amha's honor, for the affection and the high place she holds in the hearts of her countrymen.
• Among the many invitations held in honor of the delegations of the women's organizations was the excursion to which the Lebanese Red Cross invited them, to the city of Sidon, at which the faces of the devoted, sincere ladies shone, headed by Mrs. Faiza al-Solh, wife of His Excellency the Prime Minister. In this invitation soundness of taste and superb Lebanese hospitality were on display.
• On the afternoon of Saturday, April 16, the Lebanese Red Cross distributed large quantities of Lebanese foods of every kind, with cakes and sweets, to five hundred poor Lebanese families. God keep this energetic institution, which seizes every opportunity to send a little joy into the heart of the deprived poor.
• At the beginning of last month Mrs. Faiza, wife of His Excellency the Prime Minister, gave a tea party at the Normandy Hotel in honor of the women's delegations taking part in the Committee on Women's Affairs and the Regional Conference for the Middle East, attended by a large number of distinguished Lebanese ladies. The party was marked by great organization, order, and generosity, testifying to the refined taste of the hostess.
• The days of the women's conferences at the UNESCO Palace were interspersed with tours within the capital and excursions outside it to the ancient sites — two excursions, one to Baalbek and Zahle, the other to the Cedars and al-Fayha. The federations of women's societies in Tripoli also gave a tea party in honor of the conference delegates at the Golden Shore café, attended, besides the conference delegations, by more than two hundred of the distinguished ladies of the North.
The mistress of ceremonies was Mrs. Salwa Fares, who presented Mrs. Iqbal Izz al-Din al-Dhawq, president of the Red Cross branch in Tripoli, who gave a gracious address in Arabic, welcoming the Western ladies and praising their valuable works. She was followed by Mrs. Minerva Ghorayeb, who spoke in English, and then by Mrs. Marie Boulos in French. Mrs. Lefaucheux, president of the Committee on Women's Affairs, replied, expressing her great pleasure at visiting the Cedars and making the acquaintance of the ladies of al-Fayha... The guests then gathered around a buffet holding every variety of
Tripoli sweets, which testified to a refined taste and to a generosity surpassing Hatim's own.
• The Young Muslim Women's Association gave a concert of song at the Dunia Cinema, under the patronage of the wife of His Excellency Riad al-Solh. The president of the association, Mrs. Habiba Yakan, spoke, noting the projects carried out by the association's institute and its club since its founding — works for which the association, not yet two years old, deserves thanks, for it is fighting illiteracy comprehensively, without distinction between one community and another.
As for the concert itself, the art of song appeared there in its most brilliant forms, from the singers Zakiyya Hamdan and Najah Salam.
