Abolish Them!!

"Among the latest news: the government has decided to move the houses of licensed prostitution from the heart of the city to another place."

... The problem of licensed prostitution, which the law permits in this country, is not the only social problem whose solution demands serious, conscious action on the part of the authorities. But it is the only problem that demands firm, decisive, swift action, with no room in it for twisting and turning; for this problem, in its true nature, before being a disgrace to mankind, is a flagrant degradation of the human personality, and of the personality of woman as mother, wife, and useful member of society. The enactment of laws officially permitting this cheap traffic in honor is nothing but a scandalous official proclamation of this degradation which strikes woman, by law, at the hands of the responsible authorities. And the persistence of this deep social problem, unsolved to this day, is nothing but a tacit admission by the responsible men of this country that they do not grasp this unjust social reality which strikes the personality of woman, and strikes society itself.

Moving these places from the heart of the city to some other part of it, or to its outskirts, does not and will not solve the problem at its root. These places, wherever they may be — in the heart of the city or on its sands — are always, and will always remain, so long as they exist, a black stain on the brow of this civilized country... They are always, and will always remain, so long as they exist, a loathsome variety of the abominable slaveries — history, in all the slaveries it has known, has known none uglier... They are always, and will always remain, so long as they exist, a degradation of the high ideals and the spiritual values which woman carries on this earth...

They are a degradation of noble motherhood, of virtuous wifehood, and of human dignity. The women's organizations at work in this country demand of the authorities serious action toward the abolition of this social scourge; and the women's organizations will not cease demanding this social duty until this blot is wiped from the brow of this country.
