• Early last month the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) opened a club and hostel in the city of Tripoli for the young ladies who were obliged to move to Tripoli with the Iraq Petroleum Company, leaving their homes and families for the first time. In the association's hostel they have found an atmosphere full of friendship, affection, and family spirit. Nearly one hundred and fifty members have joined this branch. The Tripoli branch is headed by Miss Salwa Zoghaib, assisted by an administrative board and nine committees.
• Miss In'am al-Saghir, after her return from Europe, was the object of warm welcome in the literary and cultural circles of Beirut and Tripoli. She spoke in more than one club and accepted the invitations of most of the associations. She was the first young lady to speak at the Lebanese Makassed College, calling for woman's political and civil rights and for the amendment of the law so as to apply equality between man and woman.
• Every year the "Arab Orphan Committee" at the American University of Beirut holds a benefit in the cause of this smothered sapling. This year's celebration was under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of National Economy, Mr. Philip Takla; a number of speakers addressed it, calling attention to the aid of the downtrodden orphan.
• The Young Muslim Women's Club invited the Beirut public in the month of May to hear two lectures: The first: by Miss Aliyya Marwa, on woman's position toward public life. The second, by Dr. Omar Farroukh, on historical education and its effect upon society.
• The charity bazaar to whose opening the women's committee of the Islamic Orphanage invited the public, under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Beshara El-Khouri, President of the Republic, was among the most charming affairs of its kind. It was attended by a great throng from Beirut's honorable families. We commend the zeal of the women's committee.
• Dr. Michel Jabara has returned from the United States, having specialized in women's and genital diseases, and has opened a medical clinic equipped with the most modern electrical apparatus for shortwave treatment, on Ouzai Street. There is no doubt that his
long experience makes him worthy of the confidence of the families.
• Dr. Semaan Katrib and Madame his wife have been blessed with a baby boy, their firstborn, whom he has named "Riyad." To Mrs. Katrib and to her husband, our congratulations; and to the little child, health and well-being.
• The Women's Solidarity held a general meeting on May 9, 1949, at the home of its president, Mrs. Laure, wife of Mr. Georges Tabet. After acquainting itself with the resolutions adopted by the women's committee charged with representing Lebanon before the Commission on the Status of Women at its third session, it unanimously approved these resolutions, and it asks of the government their realization, and the lending of special attention to:
1 - The necessity of achieving compulsory education. No one can miss
the importance of this subject, not only for raising the cultural level, but for cleansing society of begging children and removing them from the moral dangers that threaten their souls and may sometimes drag them into crime and theft.
2 - The necessity of giving woman her political rights, for it is not fitting that Lebanon, which was and remains in the vanguard of the Arab states, should fall behind them in this field — especially since there are many problems and questions that will never be raised, and never solved, without a woman's voice in the midst of the assembly.
[...] for boys, where she displayed before the students a sample of the work of Swedish youth and compared it with the work of our own youth, which left a happy impression in the souls of the teachers and students.
