Questions on Love and Marriage

1 — Does the love felt by girls in adolescence — that is, between the ages of 12 and 18 — last?

— A general survey was made of the students of 69 colleges, to learn whether the love girls feel in this period of their school years is a lasting emotion or a restless, changing one. It has been scientifically established that this emotion changes quickly and under the slightest influences, which shows that it is not lasting, but temporary.

2 — What is the ideal age for marriage?

— Marriage succeeds most often, and ends least often in divorce, when the man is twenty-nine and the girl is twenty-four. The reason given is that at this age the man and the girl are emotionally balanced and mature. When the married pair are under twenty, the likelihood of divorce becomes greater than it is at the ideal age. Even so, the first condition of the ideal marriage is emotional maturity in the man and the girl; some persons at eighteen are emotionally more mature than some people at thirty!

3 — Are women of higher education better able to make their husbands happy than others?

— The number of women of higher education who seek divorce is four times the number of those who seek divorce among women of ordinary education. Perhaps the reason is that highly educated women expect a man to be free of faults and call him to account for every slip, and are further from forbearance than others of ordinary education; or the reason may be that highly educated women prefer the practice of certain professions to being bound by marriage.

4 — Is there a connection between successful marriage and intelligence?

— Certainly! Divorce among married couples who are university graduates is far less frequent than among others. Perhaps the reason is that intelligent people are more sensible and wise in choosing one another for marriage, and are also better able to solve the problems of surroundings and family which so often lead to a demand for divorce.

5 — Is it true, as the chemists claim, that kissing produces the same chemical reaction produced by anger and fear?

— Yes. Kissing, like anger and fear, stimulates the action of the

pituitary gland, situated at the base of the brain, and the adrenal gland; many of the white blood corpuscles break up, the blood pressure rises, the heart quickens its beating, and the lungs quicken their breathing and their demand for more oxygen.

6 — Can a married pair be happy if they differ in religion or sect?

— The happiness of a married pair who differ in religion depends on the degree of fanaticism of the two parties. If the fanaticism of both parties is intense, then it is futile to look for happiness. If one of the two parties is easygoing, the possibility of happiness is stronger. And if tolerance and understanding are in the nature of both, then happiness is all the more possible.

The most important thing is that the pair agree, before marriage, on the religion the children will profess. And the most widely accepted arrangement is that the children profess the husband’s religion, since they bear his name.
