Jealousy between husband and wife is one of the worst diseases of marriage, and one of the ugliest destroyers of its pillars. Woman in general is more prone to jealousy than man, and her jealousy shows itself in many forms. It appears in a violent, active form when the wife criticizes her husband, goes to extremes in analyzing his every motion and stillness, and creates for him a disagreeable atmosphere, far removed from the serenity of life.
There is another kind of woman whose jealousy shows itself in withdrawing into herself and feigning calm and quiet; but the signs of anxiety and suspicion never cease tearing at such women's breasts and robbing them of sleep, breeding in them obsessions and fears, and they dare not confront their husbands with the revolt and suppression their souls conceal!!
It is true that jealousy is one of the signs of love. The woman believes that by her jealousy over her husband she is aiming to safeguard his love for her, and does not know that she is tearing down his love with her own hand by showing him her jealousy, and destroying her dignity and her self-confidence.
Once the husband feels that his wife receives him every day with a heavy, somber face, and that she stands forever ready to declare a raging war upon him, he will, without a doubt, begin to seek happiness outside his home — and here the marital catastrophe begins to pull its threads...
What is truly regrettable is that few of us ladies have the strength to face the facts and admit to being a jealous woman. In any case, we must all remember always that jealousy does not help to keep a husband, and may create an abnormal situation that was never reckoned with.
Dear reader...
...For the second time your magazine "The Woman's Voice" writes to you, and it will write to you always, until its letters reach your heart... Yes, Madam, your heart. "The Woman's Voice" wishes first to remind you of your duty toward it, for it believes it has a moral claim upon you, and that alone is what binds you to it...
And then, we should like to present to you in this letter a splendid example of a generous sister of yours — a sister who has not forgotten that "The Woman's Voice" is her magazine, and
who has set about working with all her might to nourish it and guide it. This generous sister is Mrs. Alice, wife of the Honorable Adib Bey Nahhas, Lebanon's Minister Plenipotentiary in Argentina...
Over and above her duties and all that her diplomatic position demands of her, she performs for this magazine a great labor for which she deserves thanks...
At the end of last month "The Woman's Voice" received from Mrs. Alice Nahhas a valuable article in which she gives a portrait of the First Lady of Argentina, "Evita Perón," wife of His Excellency General Perón, President of the Argentine Republic, and explains the social role this lady plays in her country... With the article came a photograph of Mrs. Perón, signed in her own hand as a gift to "The Woman's Voice"... The photograph, Madam, and the article will be published in a coming issue. This is a deed, Madam — a noble deed done for the sake of this women's magazine, which the Lebanese Women's League treasures from one of its active members. And you, in your own field, can work to spread this magazine, to support it and to guide it. Begin now...
And be assured that you will be very proud indeed of your magazine in every circle.
"The Editors"
Postscript: A valuable letter has reached us from Mrs. Sophie Benghazi Rassam in Mosul, Iraq, in reply to these questions, a letter full of understanding and taste; it will be published later on. The views of our respected ladies will appear in succession beginning with the coming issue.
