A woman graduate in law from the University of London writes:

I resolved to study law as an avocation, without practicing the profession. But that by no means signifies that I do not follow the course of public affairs in whatever concerns this field, and what my fellow

women are doing in the arena of the bar, the bench, and the public services. True, the British woman did not in times past enjoy the rights she enjoys now. She was barred from entering the university as a student — not only to study science, law, and philoso-phy, but for any study whatsoever. Conditions turned and developed, and woman's destiny was settled on a new plan and on a footing of equality with man in every field; and so among British women there came to be the lawyer, the physi-cian, the professor, and the judge. This did not come about of itself, nor without a long, unbroken stretch of fierce struggle, patience, endurance, and sacrifice on the part of woman — whom men have denied her rights from the beginning of life until now. And it matters to me to say to my sister, woman, everywhere in the world, that our struggle has borne the best of fruit in most corners of the globe and lands of the inhabited world, and that we have taken our way up an ascending ladder of certain success. So it was that the first woman entered the profession of the bar in Britain in 1919 — she is today Mrs. Helena Normanton.
