The Cover Picture — Lady Alakija

Among the great women personalities who visited Lebanon last month was Lady Alakija, accompanied by her husband, the African leader.

In a visit which the family of “The Woman's Voice” paid to the two honored guests, Mrs. and Mr. Alakija each kindly presented a picture of themselves to the only women's magazine in this country.

Mrs. Alakija is a charming woman who speaks excellent English, which she acquired in England. She declared:

“The three weeks we have spent in the hill country of Lebanon count among the loveliest days of a lifetime. Its fine climate was enough to make all my bodily and nervous ailments disappear without consulting a doctor! We are grateful for the excellent hospitality and for the warmth with which Lebanon, government and people, received us. Our dearest wish is to return in 1951 to spend a whole summer in Lebanon's good mountains.”

When the two were asked their opinion of the Lebanese emigrants in Nigeria, they answered with a certain reserve:

“We wish — in love and sincerity — that the Lebanese in Africa kept somewhat less to themselves and mixed more with the people of the country... And how good it would be if the emigrant Lebanese woman were as active and as engaged in the field of society and humanitarian service as her Lebanese sister at home.”
