An Offering

Thurayya Malhas

قربان · ثريا ملحس

Alone... alone...
Journeying in the hush of the night
... the black rocks bend back
the strainings of my hand...
and over my paths, a setting sun...

Alone... alone...
And my lashes, bowed low
... upon the earth ...
... gather up the thorns
thorn... by thorn...
And in the great space...
the flutter of a wing...

Alone... alone...
To You, my God
... O my childhood
and my youth...

O my glory
and my desire...
To You is my ascent
... so pass over my lips
Your sweet verses...
and lull upon my eyelids
the hiss of colors
that I may sleep....
Save my path...
my path is drowning...

Alone... alone...
I walk toward You, a cry
in the cruel darkness...
over the bleeding fangs...
with a faith... stronger than strength!..
I carry my heart...
to You, an offering...
