Richest and Most Wretched

Barbara Hutton is counted the richest woman in the world; she owns thirty million pounds and the variety stores spread across the world under the name of Woolworth. Barbara was carried to the hospital when she learned that the American courts had ruled that her son, aged 13, be taken and handed over to his father, from whom she was divorced 11 years ago. She told the correspondent of the New York Times that she is the most wretched woman in the world, and that the doctors expect she will not live long.

Leaps

The American writer Edith Sitwell brought out a book that met with great success, whereupon a friend

who had been ignoring her invited her to lunch. She replied: "I thank you for your kind invitation on the occasion of my book's success, and I wish to tell you frankly that had I not accustomed myself to making use of my time and not killing it in visits and parties, my book would not have succeeded; and had I accepted the invitations of friends, women and men, my time would have been lost and my book would have failed — and then I would be invited to no lunch or dinner, and no more parties would be given in my honor, by you or by anyone else."

A Dream

Loretta Young is called the perfect lady of Hollywood, for she has captured the hearts of all with her

lofty model of noble character and elevation of soul. She works in the Society of Young Mothers, and what pains her most is that the society's homes cannot hold all those young girls, between 12 and 14 years of age, who stumble and, in their innocence, do not know the measure of the danger that awaits them. Loretta has imposed a tax on every foul word, insult, or oath by God — truthful or false — that anyone utters in the studio: if a word slips from someone, he goes of his own accord to Loretta, holding out his hand with the tax, and she takes a dollar per word from the director and the senior employee and half a dollar from the humble workman. At the end of the day she opens the box, thanking everyone for their contributions, and sends the money to the society.
