After May's death I was one of the delegation of the Lebanese Arab Women's Federation that called upon the Honorable Governor of Beirut to ask that May's name be given to one of the capital's streets (and our request was granted, and her name was given to a main street). We asked this because we felt that May's name ought to be known to every passer-by and every driver—indeed to every Lebanese—and ought to be read by the children on their way to their schools and on their way home; and because we wished the foreigner to see that Lebanon had honored this woman of genius
who raised its name high in the world of letters.
And I was secretary of the Women's Union in Beirut in the days when it was the only body that held a ceremony to immortalize May's memory. In that it had honor and pride, for whoever
honors May thereby shows an understanding of true values and an appreciation of intelligence, learning, and genius. One such as May has no need of ceremonies or elegies, for she left an ocean of lofty literature that alone suffices to immortalize her memory.
