A Letter from May to Julia Tu'mah Dimashqiyah
May

May wrote this letter to Mrs. Julia Tu'mah Dimashqiyah a few days before her mother's death, and two months before Gibran's death. After it, May ceased to write. And her letters to Rihani were the last things she wrote in her life..

Forgive me, my dear, for my telegram; but do not forgive me my lateness, and do not seek an excuse for me with our sisters, the members of the Union. The truth is that you have every right to be angry, and to say of me all that was said by the poet whose name I have forgotten, in something I have forgotten exactly what!

But I do want to say that all this delay could have been avoided had you fixed some date — had you said to me, for instance, in plain words: we shall bring out our collection on such-and-such a date. I do not say this by way of excuse. No, no. But to tell you that the abundance of my occupations forces me to attend first to the thing whose date I cannot postpone. The things that carry no date I usually put off, however dear they are to me, however cherished.

One word more, about Salwa, of whom I read in one of the Beirut papers that she presided over a session at the school, that she delivered a speech, and that she was, in that stance of hers, a

wonder to behold... When I read it I forgot the subject, for I saw among those present two shining blue eyes that tears of joy had filled. I ask God always to fill your eyes with tears of joy, for those are the tears that flood over the heart with the meaning of the Maker's bounty and

His love for the creatures He loves in a special way.

Greetings, my dear — greetings to you and to my sisters, the members of the Union.
