The Woman's Role

... It was only natural that the Syrian development — the granting to the Syrian woman of her right in the elections — should produce a strong reaction in Lebanese women's circles.

The Lebanese woman had earlier called for this right before any woman in the Arab world.

And so we have seen the women's ranks in Lebanon all summoning one another to demand these rights seriously, and in full consciousness. The responsible men have felt it their duty to face this problem in a final manner, and proposals were submitted in the Chamber of Deputies to this effect.

The posture in which some men of the Chamber appeared, standing against this right, is among the things most to be wondered at in Lebanon.

The question of woman is the point of departure in our social and spiritual life; and if this question is not solved once and for all, it means that our fundamental problems — the problem of the family, the problem of the child, the problem of motherhood, and consequently the problem of this homeland's existence as a humane, good, and beautiful homeland — will not be solved.

Woman in Lebanon is confident that she will obtain her rights whole and without any diminution, and she will know how to preserve the majesty of motherhood, its beauty and its goodness, and how to be a conscious citizen..
