• A word has reached us from Miss Lea Yanni praising the efforts being made by the Myrrh-Bearers Society in Souk el-Gharb.
This society was founded in 1919 under the presidency of Mrs. Labiba Atiyya al-Souqi. The society's aim is to assist the needy among families of modest means.
As for the society's finances, they come from the proceeds of parties and charity bazaars, from donations and subscriptions, and the like.
Miss Yanni praised the complete spirit of love and understanding among all the members of the society, who work hand in hand in everything that redounds to the good of this society.
God bless the hands that labor for good, and the great souls that were created to give.
• The "Girls' Refinement Society" in Beirut, which is presided over by the venerable Mrs. Zahia Saad, held a benefit at the Cinema Empire whose proceeds go to the education of a large number of schoolgirls in the schools of Beirut.
It is worth mentioning that this society has a branch in Choueifat that contributes to the schooling of a large number of girls of slender means in whom the moral qualifications and the desire for learning are present.
The aim of the "Girls' Refinement Society" is among the noblest of aims and the most deserving of appreciation and admiration, and so we wish this society success and prosperity.
• Word has come to us from the woman of letters Mrs. Rose Shahfa Atallah, formerly president of the Lebanese Arab Women's Federation, that the effort undertaken by the Women's Union to hang the portrait of "May" in the National Library was a noble and praiseworthy effort, upon which it was decided to place May's portrait among the immortals of Lebanon's sons.
And we in turn, having failed to make mention of this matter in the "May" issue, cannot but thank the great lady for drawing our attention to it.
.. The lectures of the "Lebanese Cénacle" return this year, strong and rich, with social, literary, artistic, and economic subjects and studies.
For this year it has prepared a rich and ample program, which it presents to the cultivated Lebanese public every Monday evening.
On the twentieth of February, at its
opening event, the Cénacle presented the poet Said Akl in selections from his new poems.
And if we have one word to say about this year's program, it is a reproach to Mr. Michel Asmar, the founder of this Cénacle: that he has utterly neglected the feminine element among his lecturers...
• During the past month, the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts held two large events.
One was literary, at which Mr. Wasif Baroudi lectured on the subject:
"Education Is Liberation and Harmony." The second was a musical evening, at which the students of the music institute of the Lebanese Academy performed, giving proof of the efforts the institute's administration is making to raise the level of music and to encourage the students to master and practice it.
• From the news of Damascus: the woman of letters Mrs. Salma al-Haffar al-Kuzbari has donated, from the proceeds of her book "The Memoirs of Hala," fifty liras to each of the following institutions:
1 - The Charity for Education and Consolation - Damascus 2 - The Awakening of the Damascene Woman - Damascus 3 - The Orphan Girls' Sponsorship Home - Damascus 4 - The Popular Canteen - Damascus 5 - The Orphan Girls' Home - Tripoli
It is a truly noble sentiment, that which Mrs. Salma has shown toward these charitable institutions, which deserve every assistance and encouragement.
• Among the visitors to Lebanon last month was the great man of letters Mr. Fouad Sarrouf and his wife Mrs. Lily; they came to Beirut on a private errand.
Mrs. Lily Sarrouf called on the magazine The Woman's Voice and expressed her admiration for it.
We published in the last issue that Mrs. Souad, wife of His Excellency Jamil Takieddine, is the daughter of the great poet Sheikh Amin Takieddine.
The truth is that Mrs. Souad is in fact the daughter of the late Najib Bey Abd al-Malik, one of the former ministers...
The virtuous lady "Labiba Ibrahim Sursock," widow of Philippe Tabet and mother of His Excellency Georges Bey Tabet, former Minister of the Interior, has answered the call of her Lord.
Mrs. Tabet was the first president of the Lebanese Women's Union, and one of the ladies who performed great works in the social and humanitarian field.
Beirut, in all its classes, walked in the funeral of the noble departed, weeping in her the praiseworthy qualities and the charitable hand that always labored for the good.
And "The Woman's Voice," as it extends itself to her noble children, and especially to His Excellency Georges Bey Tabet, bows before the memory of the great departed, asking God that her reward be in the measure of her charities.
• We have received from al-Nabk the death notice of Mrs. Emily Omar Artana, widow of the late Dr. Daoud Katibah and mother of Dr. Ibrahim Katibah and Dr. Daniel Katibah.
A well-attended funeral was held for her, in which delegations from the regions walked.
To the Katibah family and their kin, our condolences; and upon the departed, the mercy of God.
• There has passed to the mercy of God Almighty the notable Mr. Rafla Atallah. The deceased was one of those few men who performed great humanitarian works; he enjoyed, God rest him, the love of all his acquaintances, and was trusted by all.
In him his friends have lost an intimate friend who loved and was faithful. May God grant him mercy in the measure that he gave and loved and was faithful.
