Hardly does two o'clock draw near before every member of the family has gone off to his work. As for Mrs. Attlee, she stays at home with her two daughters, where they give themselves over to read-ing books and picture magazines. Mrs. Attlee leaves Downing Street once more at five in the evening, going most often to visit her family, like every Englishwoman of the middle class, or making the rounds of the big stores. Then she returns home at half past seven.

Her one hobby is her car, which she drives herself. She always takes care that it should be in good condition. The chief of protocol asked her recently whether she would like a chauffeur for her car, and she answered quite simply: "I am my own chauffeur, and my husband's chauffeur too!"

From time to time — when cir-cumstances permit — Mrs. Attlee takes her husband and children, in her car, to the little country house. There, amid the greenery, far from political troubles, "His Majesty the King's First Minister" may be seen busy pruning the flowers of his garden and tending them, his shirt-sleeves rolled up and his pipe in his mouth, while Mrs. Attlee is absorbed with her daughters in cutting out clothes and sewing them.

The servants are few in the house in which Mrs. Attlee lives. She has only two maids to clean the rooms, a cook, and two menservants. In Churchill's day, the number of servants was eight times this number!

Every week Mrs. Attlee draws up the budget of her expenses. She does not allow her expenses to exceed the figures fixed for them, and she says: "Every wife, and every mother, must know how far to go. Otherwise, ruin disorders the family, and after it come discord and the collapse of the house upon its inhabitants!"
