Nawali Pharaon

Women's circles were stricken in the month of March by the death of the deeply mourned Mrs. Nawali Pharaon, wife of His Excellency Henri Bey Pharaon.

She went to her Lord's side after a painful illness which she bore with wondrous patience.

An awesome funeral was held for her, the like of which Beirut has never witnessed: the city and the mountain marched in it, together with the men of the authorities, the delegations of the associations, and every class of people, bidding farewell to the lady of the Pharaon palace.

And "The Woman's Voice," in raising its condolences to all the family of the departed, offers its especial sympathy to His Excellency her husband, Henri Bey, praying God to enfold the departed in His mercy, and to pour upon the hearts of the bereaved family the grace of beautiful patience and consolation.

Thanks to Salma al-Haffar al-Kuzbari

• We noted in the last issue that the woman of letters Mrs. Salma al-Haffar al-Kuzbari had donated a sum of money, from the proceeds of her book "Hala's Diary," to the "Dar al-Bani'a" institution in Tripoli. Mrs. Fatima Manla Ali, secretary of the institution, sent the writer this letter:

To the esteemed woman of letters, Mrs. Salma Haffar al-Kuzbari.

The Women's Charitable Society of Tripoli is proud of the repeated manifestations of your material and moral sympathy, and of the noble enthusiasm with which you fill your soul in encouraging its works. It offers you its deep thanks and abundant respect, praying that you may enjoy the success which your virtues and fine qualities deserve, and that you may long remain a shining torch in the world of goodness and charity.

Nadim al-Khal's Journey

• Last month Mr. Nadim al-Khal and his bride departed for Haiti, and we have learned that Mr. al-Khal stopped in on his brother, the poet Mr. Youssef al-Khal, formerly editor-in-chief at Dar al-Kitab.

We wish our generous friend and his bride a blessed journey crowned with success.

Child Day

The Child Protection Society, attached to the Lebanese Red Cross, appointed the nineteenth of March as the date of the annual Child Day. Teams of young women and young men went about the streets and quarters, pinning badges on the chests of passers-by and placing in the collection boxes whatever

the hands of the charitable would bestow. One of the airplanes circled in the sky over Beirut, scattering leaflets urging the people to take part in "Child Day" and explaining the noble aim toward which it strives — namely, the protection of homeless children against want, ignorance, and disease.
