The Anti-Tuberculosis Society celebrated, at the Dhour el-Bashek Sanatorium on August 15, the laying of the cornerstone of the new building, toward whose expenses Mrs. Shafiqa Qutayt and the Syrian Relief Society in Boston helped raise funds.

The cornerstone was laid by His Excellency the Minister of Health, representing the government. Aghaya Maalouf represented the society, and the celebration was attended by a group of the emigrants who represent the society in Boston.

Welcome!

We at the management of this magazine were delighted by a surprise visit from Mr. Youssef al-Khal, former editor-in-chief of "The Woman's Voice" and of the Dar al-Kitab publications. He has come from Libya, where the United Nations delegated him to join the mission that is preparing Libya for independence.

Mr. al-Khal is accompanied by his wife, the artist Mrs. Helen. They intend to spend three weeks in Lebanon.

Mr. al-Khal told us that he will seize the opportunity of his presence here to return to creative writing and production, which he was forced to abandon throughout the two years he spent in America and Africa.

• The Lebanese Women's League extends its sincerest congratulations to Sheikh Nadim al-Khoury in Beiteddine on his recovery from his illness and his return to health, and wishes him lasting health and happiness.

• On the evening of Wednesday, August 30 last, the Lebanese and Syrian communities gave a sumptuous dinner banquet in honor of His Excellency General Perón, President of the Republic of Argentina, and his lady wife, attended by no fewer than three thousand guests, ladies and gentlemen, among them ministers, deputies, members of the Senate, governors of the provinces, and members of the diplomatic corps. The banquet was held in the sumptuous salons of "Los Ambassadeurs."

At the end of the banquet the delegates of the two communities spoke; then General Perón was presented with a beautiful plaque of pure gold on which the Lebanese and Syrian flags were drawn, and Mrs. Perón was presented with a dining set made in Jezzine, of pure gold, in an elegant case engraved with the Lebanese and Syrian flags. Mrs. Nahas, who originated the idea, wished to give the Lebanese workman, who made this precious

gift with his skilled hand, the opportunity to share in honoring a great lady who has devoted a large part of her time and effort to raising the standard of his fellow, the Argentine workman.

The young women of Lebanese descent also presented her with an artistic painting from the brush of Bibi Zogbé.

At the close of the celebration both His Excellency the President and his lady wife spoke, pointing to the high standing occupied by the Lebanese and Syrian communities and thanking the emigrants for their sentiment. They then departed, escorted with the utmost cordiality and a

• Mrs. Salwa Khoury, wife of the emigrant Mr. Nassib Mahfouz, president of the Orthodox Ladies' League in São Paulo, and holder of the Syrian Order of Devotion with palms, the Syrian Order of Merit of the first class, and the Lebanese Gold Order of Merit, has returned to Brazil after spending the summer season in Lebanon.

• Miss Nahla Marwa, one of the teachers of the elementary school at the American University of Beirut and a member of the committee for the amusement of the young, has left us for the United States to specialize in the art of teaching in kindergartens.

Our children will no doubt be looking forward to her return to Lebanon, so that after her specialization she may resume her work with them, whether at school, at

the club, or over the radio. We wish her every success on her journey. And bon voyage!

Bon Voyage!

Now that the Emigrants' Conference has ended, most of the members of the delegations have returned to the American lands.

On Sunday, September 3, Mr. Georges Barakat and his lady wife left us. They were seen off at the airport by a large number of their friends, among them Mrs. Heneni Tarcha, president of the Lebanese Women's League, and a delegation from the Anti-Tuberculosis Society.
