was weeping, and said to her: “It would be better for you to hurry to the telephone and reassure the families of these young men and girls about what has happened, lest some rumors have reached their parents and caused them alarm.”
The lady of the palace hesitated a moment, then said: “Do you not know, doctor, that I have withdrawn myself from people, and so it is hard for me to speak with any of them now?” But the doctor pressed her to make haste and inform the parents of their children's condition; he handed her the list of names and asked her to carry this out on his behalf. And the face of the lady of the palace darkened when she learned from the list that the girl she had been consoling was the daughter of that manager who had courted her in times gone by. But the situation did not now allow her revenge or gloating...
How deep a mark the zeal of this doctor left upon the soul of the lady of the palace! The social sense awoke in her, and her human conscience was roused. There was born in her a desire to continue in humane service and to carry on the work of charity. The next day she came to the doctor, offering him her services and all her means, and she began to tell him the story of her life and the motives of her isolation and her negativity. But the doctor cut her short, saying: “And yet yesterday you did a deed that stirred the admiration of the inhabitants. The days lie before you, offering you opportunity after opportunity for noble work and humane service...” And the doctor left her and went to carry on his work; as for her, she went out onto the balcony, turned her gaze over the farms and the gardens, and said: “I imprisoned myself within the walls of a great palace, but I did not win peace of mind or happiness of soul... I have become convinced that this palace is fit to be a hospital, so that its benefits will not be confined to me but enjoyed by all the people of the district... And I can remain near it by
building myself a modest dwelling on a piece of land beside it!”
And the lady of the palace turned to the doctor and said: “If you undertake to supervise the running of this hospital, I will place the whole palace at your disposal!” And only a few months passed before the inhabitants of that district learned that the palace had been turned into a hospital, that its lady had married the doctor, and that the two had set about working hand in hand in humane service and in lightening the pains of the sick and the suffering.
And the hospital of the Bekaa stands forth, bearing the name of
the lady of the palace, and travelers passed along the tale of this palace and its transformation into a center of humanitarian work. Before long the Hayfa Hospital had become a place of pilgrimage for the sick who came to it from various lands and districts. And no wonder — for it is the offering of a lady who closed the doors of her heart against the world, but who in the end came back and opened them, and quickly found her happiness in humane service and noble work, never forgetting the kindness of that doctor who opened her heart and guided her to the path of the ideal life, and of peace.
