• In the middle of last month Lebanon lost a venerable lady whose life was rich in noble deeds and generous works: the late Caroline, widow of the late Sheikh Khalil El-Khoury, and mother of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Sheikh Beshara El-Khouri, and of his distinguished brothers.
A solemn funeral was held for her, in which the pillars of the Government, the deputies, the men of the diplomatic corps, and vast crowds from the capital and from all the regions of Lebanon took part. The funeral service was held under the presidency of His Beatitude the Maronite Patriarch, in the presence of a company of prelates and men of the clergy. Eulogies for the departed were delivered by Patriarch Arida and Archbishop Moubarak.
The Lebanese Women's League offers to His Excellency the President, Sheikh Beshara El-Khouri, its dutiful condolences on the loss of the venerable mother who gave Lebanon its wise leader.
• The hand of fate has claimed the late Nafiska Basileo, sister of Dr. Basileo, following a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. Her death left a profound mark on the hearts of all her family and friends, for she was known for her fine character and her generous deeds.
Her remains were borne in a solemn procession in which the great and the notable walked, headed by the representative of the President of the Republic.
May God enfold the departed lady in His vast mercy, and grant her family patience and solace.

The Health Committee of the Union is still pursuing its work
with zeal and activity toward improving the state of health and of general cleanliness in the town. It has made many efforts, which have achieved the results sought for the comfort of the inhabitants — there is no room to enumerate them now.
The Union, and the Health Committee in particular, offer to the Honorable Governor of the distinguished city of Beirut, Nicolas Bey Rizkallah, their abundant thanks and gratitude for the kindness and graciousness he has shown in assisting the Committee. They likewise thank Sheikh Fouad Abdel Malek and Dr. Mohammad Ghandour for supporting it in everything asked of them, and for their promise to investigate all complaints submitted to them and to strive to act upon them.
It is truly a cause for satisfaction to see, on the part of the authorities, this genuine concern for the public interest, and, on the part of the inhabitants, this compliance with the authorities' orders out of willingness and consent. This shows us clearly that culture and refinement have
begun to yield their results in the character of the community and in its understanding of the meaning of progress and advancement.
