set before its eyes the condemnation of the principle of the plurality of wives, and has worked to bring the member states also to condemn it, and to generalize the principle of one wife for one man. The committee has also called for equality in the right of each of the two spouses to dissolve the bonds of marriage, and for the equality of the two sexes in the choice of the other party in marriage — which cannot be safeguarded unless all the restrictions are lifted which now stand in the way of free intermarriage among people, regardless of nationality or race or color or religion, and unless all the legislation is repealed which prevents people from moving from one country to another after marriage. The Economic and Social Council has adopted this principle, and has condemned — in a formal resolution — those laws and regulations which obstruct this desired absolute freedom in marriage.

This is a brief glimpse of the principles for which the Women's Rights Committee has striven, in its four past sessions, to establish the full measure of equality between woman and man — in fulfillment of the chief principle upon which the United Nations has proceeded, and which it inscribed in the heart of its Charter and at the opening of its Universal Declaration of Human Rights: namely, the equality of woman and man in all fundamental rights and human freedoms.
And these are the subjects whose examination and consideration the Women's Rights Committee resumed when it held its fifth regular session recently, and studied a number of reports, studies, and proposals relating to woman's political, economic, social, and family rights.
It goes without saying that the committee, the Women's Rights Committee, abides, in all it does, by the clear lines which the Economic and Social Council has drawn for it,
and in which it fixed its powers, as it works to apply the principle that woman and man must be equal in rights — all rights.
