On the nineteenth of May they held a celebration to which people of the first rank flocked,
foremost among them His Excellency Mr. Paulos Fayyad, the former minister, His Eminence the Papal Nuncio, His Grace Bishop Ayoub, His Excellency Dr. Elias al-Khoury, the Governor of the Mountain, and other ladies and gentlemen. So great was their admiration that they imagined the performers of the parts in that delightful celebration to be boarding-school pupils devoting themselves to the cause of their sisters whom life had cast out and whom the hand of man had treated harshly.
And the refugees of the Good Shepherd themselves acknowledge the kindnesses of their sisters and keep for them every grateful recognition and loyalty. Nor does the sisters' mission stop at caring for their girls so long as they remain under the roof of this house; they
follow their course even after their return to their family circle or their entry into married life — the number of those married exceeds twenty-five — providing them with work in sound, useful surroundings, and lavishing on them counsel, guidance, direction, and good management.
These are fleeting thoughts inspired in me by the mission of this institution and its daily life, divided between study, prayer, work, and training, in an atmosphere steeped in calm and peace, rich in signs of love and sacrifice, overflowing with tidings of joy, hope, and victory.
Every day you see a soul rising from its fall, and you feel that a whole world is rising and being lifted up... And every day you glimpse an unknown hand, moved by pity and love, giving what its means allow — and you wish that generous hands might multiply, helping and doing good every day and more than once, so that the
activity of the "House" may grow and endure — the House which has stood only by the support of noble benefactors, by the backing of the Government, and by the help of God Most High, first and last.
"The Woman's Voice" informs its readers and subscribers in Homs and Hama that it has appointed Mrs. Helane Merhej as its agent there, and requests them to get in touch with her for the payment of subscriptions and for all matters relating to the magazine.
