The Melody of Fate

Wadia Taha al-Najm

لحن القدر · وديعة طه نجم

"Persist in your melancholy, O summer —
do you forget what winter has done...?"

On a night of my youth...
Where thoughts were digging a grave in my wall
And the winds... harried the frail lamp...
There... fate knocked at my door...
So I cast off my robe...
And followed his footsteps...

He walked... while time stood frozen,
Along a dark, desolate road...
Twisting... cruel... like a serpent...
Poisons oozing from its mouths...
And vapors rising in colors...
And at every step... a candle goes out and fades away.
And at the bend of the path...
The hours flash past like lightning...
Feeding upon my life...

And on either side...
The bubbles of souls... in their death-throes...
Swelling... bursting... vanishing...
And the belly of night swallows... and swallows...

The hour struck... in the belly of the earth...
And fate blew... into my pipe...
It melted... then blew into my bones...
And my love took form... as the world...
And at the mouth of the river of life...
My tongue spoke...

Ah... come...
That the world may melt... beneath your palms.
Take...
This is my love... this is my worship,
Until the end...
At the mouth of the river of life.
