On Special Occasions: Be Beautiful

في المناسبات الخاصة: كوني جميلة

There come occasions in the life of every lady when she wants to appear at the very highest attainable degree of beauty and charm.

The motives spurring this intense concern may be many, but the aim is one; and for the sake of this aim the lady stands perplexed before her mirror, surveying her possibilities and how they may be exploited to the farthest limits of exploitation.

For this reason, and in the service of the readers of “The Woman's Voice,” we have decided to touch on a few observations on beauty which, for all their simplicity, give a woman that special touch of the magic she seeks...

For your hair:

1 - For speed, moisten your hair with a little cologne instead of water, for the alcohol in the cologne dries quickly and eases the task of setting the hair, and at the same time lends it a pleasant scent.

2 - In the bustle of cooking, wrap your head in a clean kerchief, for nothing seeps into the hair and clings to it like the smell of cooking. And what is the worth of a splendid dress and a complete toilette if the smell of cooking rises from your hair?

3 - If perfume must be used, let it be of the finest kind, and do not mix two scents... Spray the perfume, after completing your toilette, on your hair and behind your ears.

For your face:

1 - Wash your face well before beginning to make it up. Never apply rouge and powder before making certain your skin is perfectly clean.

2 - In a state of great fatigue, after a day or days of continuous work, it is well to coat your face with foundation cream — the cream that goes under the powder — and to be generous in applying it, for this will hide some of the marks of weariness and hold your makeup for a long while, so that perspiration does not wash it away and leave behind it wrinkling and sallowness.

3 - It is well to draw a line of shadow close along the lids of your eyes, for this makes the eyes appear wider, and the lashes more strikingly long.

4 - When you wipe your lipstick from your fingertips, wipe those traces on the part of your ears that shows. It has been proven that this lends the general appearance, at an evening party, a touch of charm.

For your hands:

1 - On special occasions the chores multiply, and the hands are naturally exposed

to much knocking and friction; so never sit down to trim your nails and color them before most of these chores are finished.

2 - It is quite essential, in the week of the holidays, to keep rubbing your hands with a nourishing cream, every night before sleep, to prevent their drying and peeling.

3 - Color your nails to their very ends, especially if the shape of your hands is square, for this suggests length in the fingers. And in such cases never wear wide rings that slide down toward the knuckle, for their look, worn in this way, gives the hand an idea of shortness — and vice versa.

General notes:

1 - If you are one of those who wear eyeglasses, remember two things:

The first is to use a bright red for your lips.

The second is to avoid excess in dressing your hair; the more natural your coiffure, the better the aim is served.

2 - Make certain that the color of your face and of your neck is alike, especially if the neckline is wide and revealing. So when you apply cream or dust on powder, let your application of it be equal on face and neck.

3 - After the bath, sprinkle a little perfume on your body and rub it in well, especially in the places where perspiration is abundant, for this makes you sure of yourself and keeps you clear of criticism, on these special occasions — at parties and holidays — and may you be well with every year.
