... A cloud heavy with bounties passed through the sky of my country one fleeting time; it poured down its torrent of water, quenching the withered and the tender down of the crops... then it vanished in the storm, while the eye of the earth is still upon it...
And The Woman's Voice was among the lands made fertile by its water and its giving. Mr. Fouad Suleiman, throughout the time he headed its editing, devoted to it the essences of his mind and the choicest parts of his spirit, and led it, with a devotion beyond all devotion, through the rugged passes, on the paths of the summits: for it is a message to the Arab woman wherever she may be, offering its readers woman's intellectual, spiritual, and bodily needs in an elegant garment, and with taste and art and letters...
For the sake of that golden age alone — two full years — the least The Woman's Voice can do is join the many friends eager to immortalize his memory, and so it devotes half of this issue to our great man of letters, on the fortieth day after his passing, in acknowledgment of part of what it owes him.
And The Woman's Voice, appreciating the grievous loss that literature and poetry have suffered, humbly raises this issue to its friend, the bereaved wife, Josephine Suleiman, in the hope that this gesture of ours may wipe her heart with fair consolation!
... O generous cloud that passed through the sky of my country that fleeting time: you have left, of your trace, in our land, a sweet fragrance and an everlasting memory that does not die...
The departed man of letters, Mr. Fouad Suleiman
* Born in Fih, Koura, 1914.
* A graduate of the Frères school, Tripoli, and of the Jesuit university, Beirut.
* Teacher of literature, language, and thought at the secondary school of the American University of Beirut for thirteen years.
* The nation lost him on the morning of the fourteenth of December, 1951, after five months of pain and suffering, of the physicians' bewilderment, and the exhaustion of their knowledge.
* He left behind in this world, in his home, a life's companion, Josephine, and three fledglings like the tenderest drops of dew: Rabi', Walid, and Wisam.
* The Lebanese government awarded him the Order of Education, First Class, in appreciation of his efforts in the service of Lebanon's rising generation.
* The Permanent Committee for the Perpetuation of His Memory is holding a ceremony in his remembrance in the Assembly Hall of the American University of Beirut on the tenth of February, at four o'clock in the afternoon, and Radio Lebanon will broadcast the ceremony.
* Published today, the firstfruit of his writing: "The Moon's Path" — a collection of his literary essays. Mikhail Naimy wrote its introduction; some friends gathered the pieces and supervised their printing; and Messrs. Buhairi Brothers, owners of "Dar al-Ahad," undertook its publication in elegant form, in honor of the memory of the departed man of letters.
