* Arriving today by air, returning from Europe, is our friend the man of letters Dr. Abd al-Rahman al-Labban, a graduate of the American University of Beirut, after an absence of four years spent in the universities and hospitals of London specializing in nervous and mental diseases. Dr. al-Labban needs no introduction: he is among the most distinguished of our young men in learning, culture, and character.
We are pleased to announce to his many friends and admirers that he has joined the esteemed medical staff of the Lebanon Hospital for Nervous and Mental Diseases — that great humanitarian institution of which Lebanon is proud.
We congratulate him on his safe arrival and wish him all the success and good fortune he deserves.
The Ladies' League Association of Ras Beirut is holding a variety entertainment, in which a number of schools and institutions will take part, on February 16, 1952, at 3 p.m., in the West Hall auditorium of the American University. The association holds a party at every New Year, the proceeds of which are spent on helping our girls to obtain a university education. “The Woman's Voice,” which appreciates this association's efforts and its noble aim, urges the ladies and the little ones to attend
this party, and hopes from the mothers every support and encouragement for it.
Muhammad al-Buhairi January 1, 1951
... With the first cheer of the new year, the child Muhammad Ghalib al-Buhairi completed his first year, and his gracious parents celebrated
this happy anniversary with a charming family gathering, where the sweet cheers of childhood rose from every side. May God keep the beautiful little “Muhammad,” the delight of his parents' eyes, and keep joy ever-present in their home...
Mrs. Ghalib al-Buhairi is pleased to announce that her receiving days are the Monday and Tuesday at the end of each month.

Every time he drew a breath and puffed out the smoke he had swallowed from his narghile — which rarely leaves him by day and through most hours of the night — he burst out at me, saying: Woman's political rights! Her equality with men! What a strange and wondrous heresy in the closing years of the twentieth century... And what does woman want beyond a husband, a shelter, and their derivatives?
And without leaving me room to ask a question, or to answer one, he said to me, smiling the smile of the victor — my silence may well have deluded him: My son, woman was created for the home alone, and world society will never find in her a better use than the bearing of sons and the preservation of the human constitution, which admits of no alteration or change.
As for me, his opinions did not astonish me — there are many like him whom life has brought to a halt at a certain point. And I excused him, too, for several reasons — among them that he has known nothing of the world but the narghile, and has tasted nothing but the swallowing of smoke.
