Look to the Beauty of Your Hair and Skin

Can you believe, Madam, that the lady of the picture, Mrs. Betty Comey, does arduous work that is in fact men's work: she milks the cows and tends them, and single-handed does the work of her big house, her husband, and her three children...

Yet these many arduous responsibilities have not made of her a broken-down, aged woman, as happens with our women who are in a situation like hers; Betty still gives her beauty the sufficient care by which she can preserve it and appear as the charming lady who knows the worth of a woman's beauty and the necessity of caring for it...

The working hours in her daily program come to sixteen—which led Betty to believe, at first, that it was impossible to keep a soft skin and glossy hair... But her erect figure and her deep, attractive eyes were a strong prop to her femininity, deserving some sacrifice for their sake; and she won, and did not lose!...

And here, Madam, is what this lady did:

Five minutes every morning: after splashing her face with lukewarm water, she smooths over it the

"cream" suited to her skin and works it in with her fingertips for two minutes, in the well-known manner—that is, from below upward, then with a half-circle motion; then she splashes her face with cold water and dries it well and gently... This simple operation helps her skin to keep its softness and to avoid wrinkles...

Notice, Madam, that Betty's short hair lends her a look of youth. She certainly appears years younger than she is—and that pleases her, of course!!—and it suits her long face.

All that Betty does daily for her hair is an operation of two minutes: she goes down over her hair with a stiff brush, directing the brush outward and in a circular fashion... And she is confident that this style suits her head.

To protect her hair from the dryness that arises in situations like hers, Betty rubs her scalp with a nourishing oily cream once a week, and rubs the roots of the hairs with her fingertips for ten minutes. This operation, as she says, gives the hair vitality and sheen.

An operation before sleep: like most ladies with many occupations, Betty finds no time for her

daily bath and for her beauty care except at the end of the day, after the children have gone to bed.

The first thing she does is to spread a quantity of cold cream over her face and wipe off the dirt well with soft tissue; then she spreads on a fresh quantity of cream, which stays on her face and neck for the length of the bath and seeps into the pores of her skin, the hot steam helping to complete this operation; so Betty comes out of the bath with a visible improvement in her complexion, and herself more confident of her beauty than before...

(1) Betty affirms that the lip brush helps to correct the line of the lips. Hold the brush or the pencil steadily, and rest your little finger on the chin. For her lips she uses the bright shade, which gives her complexion youth and vitality.

(2) Using the hairbrush in this fashion helps every lady to keep glossy, healthy hair; it stimulates the scalp and aids the circulation of the blood.

(3) A light sprinkling of nourishing hair oils protects it from splitting and dryness, and thus preserves its softness and cleanliness.
