Miss Raja Sharif

On March 31 the women's committee of the Islamic Orphanage invited refined Beirut circles to hear the lecture delivered by Miss Raja Sharif in the hall of the orphanage.

Miss Raja Sharif has lately come from England, where she spent four years at the School of Oriental Languages of the University of London, graduating with the degree of B.A. in the history of the Middle East...

The subject of the lecture was "Woman's Political Rights Around the World." Miss Sharif set out the history of this movement and how woman obtained her rights from the middle of the nineteenth century until today.

• Last month there appeared a book by Mrs. Madeleine Arqash, "Mona," a Lebanese story whose events take place in Deir al-Qamar and Beiteddine, drawn from the very heart of our social life.

The author subjects to criticism the false foundations on which marriage is built in our country, and the worn-out traditions and customs that paralyze married life and turn it into a tragedy over which hearts bleed...

And Mrs. Madeleine Arqash, in touching on these delicate, sensitive subjects, does so out of experience and a true understanding of the social problems from which we suffer with such reluctance, knowing no way out of them... And in the cause of solving these problems she offers bold opinions, new to the reader, worthy of perusal and attention.

"The Woman's Voice" congratulates Mrs. Arqash on this high resolve, and on this zeal for the daughters of her sex and for the happiness of the rising generation.
