Last month the Lebanese Women's Union hosted, at the Military Club, a ceremony honoring Dr. Salwa Nassar. After the vice-president, Mrs. Salwa Mahmasani Moumina, welcomed the guests, touching on the life of Dr. Salwa Nassar — a life surrounded by high ambition and unremitting effort — and on the distinguished place she occupies in the physics department of the American University, His Excellency the Prime Minister, Sami al-Solh, rose and pinned upon the honoree's breast the Medal of Education, first class, in recognition of her effort in the field of science. Finally, refreshments were passed round among bouquets of pink carnations... And here is the text of the address delivered by Dr. Salwa Nassar. She said:
With all pride and humility I accept this Lebanese decoration, which I revere, from your hand, Your Excellency, delighted with it because I consider it not merely your appreciation of science, but also an appreciation of the awakening of our Lebanese ladies and of their sense of the importance of the natural sciences in our present age. To the board and membership of the Lebanese Women's Union I offer my highest respect.
The Women's Union earlier proposed that I present to Your Excellency a plan for a scientific laboratory in which cosmic rays and the use of radioactive isotopes would be studied — one which might perhaps be the nucleus of a comprehensive scientific institute in this country of ours. That proposal is clear proof of our worthy ladies' awareness that science grows in laboratories and through the contact of minds, and of their interest in establishing a center where some of our young people would be trained in the methods of scientific research. And to present such a plan to Your Excellency is an expression of our certainty of your concern for intellectual matters and for the moral benefit they yield the country.
Cosmic rays, which assail our earth continuously at every minute of
our lives, have properties that vary with geographic location; they are studied on the highest mountains, in the depths of the earth, and on the surface of the sea in all parts of the world with the greatest seriousness and attention — except in this spot of ours, although Lebanon possesses geographic aptitudes that are ample, indeed that call for (and invite) such research. And great is the importance of what may be attained in the study of cosmic rays, which carry the energy latent in the nucleus of the atom.
Nations, and especially the small ones among them, make themselves known and their fame is spread in their own day, and they are immortalized in history, in the measure of their intellectual message and in the measure of what they add to the world's scientific heritage.
Your encouragement, then, Your Excellency, is a herald of good for everyone who has pledged himself to the service of the natural sciences. Kindly accept my sincere thanks and respect.
