The Home Economics Exhibition at the Makassed College for Girls

Last month the Makassed College for Girls held a delightful tea party in its own hall, on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition of home economics and dressmaking, under the supervision of Miss Samia Zaki, delegate of the Egyptian Ministry of Education. The party was honored by His Excellency the Prime Minister, Sami Bey al-Solh, by the Honorable president of the Makassed Charitable Society and its worthy members, and by a large company of the notables and dignitaries of the town. After they had visited the exhibition and seen the fine results it contained, and the efforts expended in preparing the Makassed girl soundly, fitting her to be a complete mistress of a home, Miss Zahiyah Dughan, directress of the college, rose and delivered a gracious address in which she spoke of the good ties that bind the Makassed Society to its Egyptian brethren, the members of the venerable Ministry of Education, and expressed to them her thanks, and the thanks of the esteemed Society, for the sending of Mrs. Nazira Niqula, inspector-general of the home economics institutes in Cairo, to supervise the annual examinations in this branch.

And after the guests had partaken of various refreshments, they went out full of praise for the

The Diploma Ceremony

As for the diploma-distribution ceremony, it was delightful and splendid. The ceremony opened with a recitation from the Holy Quran, then with a fine address of welcome by the directress of the institute, Miss Zahiyah Dughan; there followed the literary speaker of the ceremony, Mrs. Salwa Mahmasani Moumina, who delivered an address that left a happy impression in the girls' hearts.

Then Mrs. Hanifa, wife of Mr. Anis al-Nusuli, president of the schools committee, with her own gracious hand distributed the diplomas, which numbered 90

ladies who had prepared this exhibition, almost unique of its kind, which won the admiration and astonishment of all.

— ranging over the baccalaureate in its two parts, the brevet, the certificat, home economics, and the Holy Quran.

It should be recorded with pride that certain ladies donated splendid prizes for the deserving: Mrs. Hanifa, wife of Mr. Anis al-Nusuli, gave 100 Lebanese lira; Mrs. Ni'ma Qaranful gave a small gold case for the Holy Quran; and the lady wife of Hasan Bey al-Qadi gave two copies of the Noble Quran — thereby earning the thanks of all and their fragrant praise.

The esteemed Society likewise gave two gold wristwatches to the two first-place winners: Miss Lamia al-Aghar of the brevet class and Miss Safiyya al-Shibl of the second secondary class.

And so the party ended amid the applause of approval and admiration.
