• Among the Arab women's personalities who visited Lebanon this summer was Mrs. Ismat Sabah al-Said, secretary of the Iraqi Women's Union and delegate of the General Arab Women's Union to the All-Pakistan Women's Conference.

Mrs. Ismat al-Said is an energetic worker in the service of the Iraqi woman and in the social field, and she is, besides, the mother of two children. Yet her many duties have not kept her from continuing study and research: this summer she obtained the doctorate from the universities of Egypt, the subject of her thesis being "Petroleum."

Mrs. al-Said has traveled from Lebanon to London, in the company of her husband, Mr. Sabah Nuri al-Said, in search of rest and recreation.

• Among those who will shortly be leaving Lebanon for America is Miss May Fayyad, an official in Social Affairs and one of the members of the Executive Committee for Women's Rights. She has been given, under Point Four, a grant to study juvenile reformatories in the United States.

We, who appreciate in Miss May Fayyad her intelligence and her talents, wish her a blessed journey, and that she may return equipped with the latest progress attained by the juvenile

reformatories of America, so that Lebanon may profit from her knowledge and her experience.

• At Souk el-Gharb the golden jubilee of the worthy educator Mrs. Mariam Baroudi was celebrated, for the signal educational services she has rendered our girls through fifty consecutive years...

The lady of the jubilee is one of the earliest graduates of the National College in Choueifat, and one of the pupils of the English lady who founded the institute, Louisa Procter.

No sooner had Mrs. Mariam

Baroudi obtained her diploma than she took up numerous teaching posts, between Lebanon and Egypt, so that in every spot, here and there, there is a band of her pupils and of those schooled at her hands...

She was, besides, an active member of a number of women's associations aiming at noble humanitarian ends...

For these signal services, fifty years long, Mrs. Mariam Baroudi deserved the golden jubilee, and deserved as well the Lebanese Order of Merit, in recognition of her good works and her contribution to the rising generation.

At the jubilee celebration spoke the champion of the ladies, Mr. George Baz, who gave a full account of the honoree's struggle and of the story of her life. After him spoke Mr. Emile Baroudi, and among what he said:

"Among the blasphemies against knowledge is the acquiring of knowledge and the hoarding of it, as many do, monopolizing it and using it for their personal interests — and this is selfishness incarnate. But the unknown soldier, the faithful guardian of knowledge, is he who seeks knowledge in order to distribute it among his brothers in humanity, so that he profits by it himself and makes it profit others; and at the head of these unknown soldiers stands the teacher.. The teacher searches for knowledge everywhere and spreads it wherever he may be; he is the leader of the generation, the builder of the nation's greatness, and the maker of its youth; he is self-immolating sacrifice and perfect love. Yes: never have I seen a great man in whom the world takes pride without thinking first of his teacher, who brought him to what he attained; for but for his teacher's favor he would have died as he lived, a cipher in the lexicon of life and unknown in its wildernesses.. Marvel, then, at an unknown man in whose hand are the keys of all that is known..."
