very least. And were
he to struggle for his rights, and she to struggle for hers, the interests would never agree nor the benefit become general, and society would remain weak and feeble, subject to a worn-out dualism that profits neither him nor her.
We are in an age that demands much striving to wrest the rights of the individual from the reactionary character of systems and laws that never arose from the need of the society in which we live, nor from its interest. And the bodies that arise on the foundations of those reactionary systems and laws are feudal bodies that do not consent to granting freedom to all people and without distinction.
The sum of the matter is that the political, social, and cultural struggle must be subject to the interest of the people as a whole, not to the benefit of a particular sex or of a cultural, sectarian, economic, or political class. If we unify the aims of the struggle in this fashion, its benefits become general, and we bring down a great number of the limited confessional, political, and economic blocs from which there is no general benefit and which are never fit for progress, advancement, and development... We must guarantee the fundamental rights of every individual; and the fundamental rights are human, democratic rights, comprehensive and complete. And their acquisition must be a general, comprehensive, complete acquisition... Every struggle on a partial, limited basis is a failed, limping struggle, deserving neither the care nor the efforts we expend upon it at the present time — men and women alike.
News from Tripoli tells that the valiant lady Karima Fares has met her Lord's face at seventy-eight years of age, years spent in works of piety and charity.
The departed was the founder of the "Relief of the Destitute" Association and its president since 1924. It is worth mentioning that this association gathers a choice élite of the ladies of the Fayha, and works in silence and vigor to relieve the needy and the destitute. It is distinguished by its non-sectarian character, embracing members from the various communities, and its aid is likewise distributed without sectarian distinction. The members of the association work with the utmost zeal, drawing their guiding spirit from their president, the departed Mrs. Karima Fares, who spared no effort, throughout her tenure of the presidency, in extending a beneficent hand and lightening the pains of the sick and the hard-pressed; and in this she fulfilled her mission in the fullest measure.
The magazine The Woman's Voice, which sees in the departed's passing a great loss to the homeland, offers its warmest condolences to the honorable Fares family, hoping that from among them a successor will arise to complete the great humane mission.
