O Lovely One

Riyad al-Azhari

يا حلو · رياض الأزهري

O lovely one, here is my heart —
do with it what you will;
Do not ask people what
has befallen it — ask your beauty!

Night never brought forth a star
but that it brought back your image,
And the dawn, as it saunters,
comes trailing your ropes.

It has worn away in torment and sickness —
how then can you be harsh and cold,
While you indulge your own coquetry
and the heart is a child before you?

*

I came while longing blazed —
and send me a breeze
So spread your shade over me —
that passes by, kissing your shawl.

*

If not upon one who loves,
on whom will you bestow your favor?
Life holds but a dream of seconds —
O lovely one, let your union live.
